Coastal Karnataka Farmers Urged to Enroll in Crop Insurance Amid Monsoon Uncertainty
IN · Published Jun 27, 2026
The Agriculture Department in coastal Karnataka has urged farmers to subscribe to the Karnataka Raitha Suraksha Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, a crop insurance scheme, as the southwest monsoon remains erratic. The scheme, implemented by Indus Ind General Insurance Company Ltd., offers financial relief in cases of crop failure due to natural calamities such as deficient rainfall, landslides, hailstorms, or untimely rains. Farmers can register for the scheme until August 14, 2026, by paying a premium of ₹611.91 per acre, which is 2% of the insured sum of ₹30,595.
The department has set a target of 10,000 hectares of paddy sowing in Dakshina Kannada district, but only 70 hectares have been sown so far. Adequate seed and fertilizer supplies are available to support the initiative.

Impact & Risks

Farmers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts face significant risks due to the delayed and inconsistent monsoon. The lack of rainfall could lead to widespread crop failures, affecting livelihoods and food security. The insurance scheme aims to mitigate these risks by providing compensation for losses caused by natural calamities, including landslides, hailstorms, and untimely rains. However, low enrollment in the scheme could leave many farmers vulnerable to financial distress. The current sowing progress is far below the target, indicating potential challenges in meeting agricultural goals for the season.
